What Causes Nasal Obstruction and When Should You See a Specialist?

Difficulty breathing through the nose is one of the most common reasons patients seek ENT advice. Nasal obstruction can affect sleep, exercise, concentration, and overall quality of life, yet many people live with symptoms for years before seeking specialist assessment. Understanding the underlying cause is the first step towards effective treatment.

Common causes of nasal obstruction

Nasal obstruction is not a diagnosis in itself but a symptom with several possible causes. One of the most common is a deviated septum, where the cartilage and bone dividing the nasal passages are not straight, narrowing one or both sides of the nose. This may develop naturally over time or follow injury.

Another frequent cause is chronic inflammation of the nasal lining, often linked to allergies or long-standing sinus problems. In some cases, patients develop nasal polyps, which are benign swellings inside the nose that can block airflow and reduce the sense of smell.

Enlarged turbinates, the structures inside the nose that help humidify air, can also contribute to ongoing blockage when they become persistently swollen.

Because several conditions can exist at the same time, a careful examination is essential to determine the true cause of symptom and exclude a sinister/concerning cause of a single sided obstruction.

When medical treatment is enough

Many cases of nasal obstruction improve with medical treatment. Nasal steroid sprays, saline irrigation, and allergy management can significantly reduce inflammation and improve airflow. For this reason, surgery is not always the first step.

A specialist assessment helps determine whether symptoms are likely to respond to medication alone or whether structural factors are preventing improvement.

When to consider specialist assessment

You may benefit from seeing a specialist if:

  • nasal blockage persists despite treatment

  • breathing problems affect sleep or exercise

  • you experience frequent sinus infections

  • your sense of smell has reduced

  • symptoms are mainly on one side of the nose

A detailed consultation and nasal examination, sometimes including endoscopy or imaging, allows an accurate diagnosis and a tailored treatment plan.

The importance of correct diagnosis

One of the key aspects of managing nasal obstruction is identifying all contributing factors. Treating only one part of the problem can sometimes lead to ongoing symptoms. Specialist rhinology assessment focuses on understanding nasal airflow, sinus health, and structural anatomy together, ensuring treatment addresses the underlying cause rather than just the symptoms.

Improving breathing and quality of life

For many patients, effective treatment of nasal obstruction leads to better sleep, improved exercise tolerance, and overall wellbeing. Whether treatment involves medication or surgery, the goal is always to restore comfortable, natural breathing in the safest and most appropriate way.

If you are experiencing ongoing nasal blockage or breathing difficulties, a specialist consultation can help clarify the cause and explore the most suitable treatment options.
